Having submitted an artwork to be juried for the “Wild Things” show, I learned 208 paintings were submitted, and 80 were selected by the jurying process.

I was one of the lucky 80! That sounds like the title of a book or at least a movie.

I am so pleased. So many paintings. And a theme show to boot!

I usually avoided “Theme” shows—until this year. I was accepted at the last show and now this show. Two theme shows in a row! How great is that?

Why do I avoid “Themes”? Well…my brain doesn’t work that way. Suggest a theme, my mind is blank.

I literally interpret the message…then it gets complicated in my little head. It feels like I don’t fit in my head. Nor do I fit in the group who is part the whole event.

They get it. I don’t.

My examples draw a lot of blank stares and gaping mouths.

Hmmm.

I go home and have coffee. I stare at my easel. Whiteness. That is what I see. Well, lately it is grayness—I tint my canvas prior to painting. Gray can make paint “zing” or can depress you. Like sitting in a little corner asking “why don’t I think that way?”

But this time, upon examining available paintings hanging in my studio, I forced myself to think beyond the painted subject. It worked—twice in two months!

However, I fear my time as a theme painter is limited.

But then…

Source: This lady was a great model. Having sketched her from life, I spent weeks finishing up from a photograph. Took most of the summer, but I enjoyed every moment.

Although portraits are a challenge, I love every minute of it.

Jo M. Orise - July, 2016 Art Update

Lincolnville Beach - the Lincolnville Fine Art Gallery

UMaine Belfast Center art show ended a few weeks ago. On my way home from retrieving my painting, I decided to visit the Lincolnville Fine Art Gallery
at Lincolnville Beach. It is on the route to Belfast.

My previous attempt to visit the gallery proved futile—closed. This time I was in luck and I happily viewed lovely works of art and craft.

I complimented the owner, Dwight, at his art and craft selection and gallery display. 

Dwight has on display his own creations of wood sculptures and wall hangings, which I found very charming and tastefully executed. (One of his large pieces is hanging on the right side of the gallery as seen in this photo.) He is an artist/ owner/curator/realtor! And I thought I was the busy one.

 Dwight invited me to fetch my painting from the car.


"You painted this?" he chuckled.

"Yes."

"How about leaving it here. I have room for it."

So, after discussing the terms and reaching agreement, I now have my painting hanging in the Lincolnville Fine Art Gallery.

I am happy about this opportunity to be represented in Lincolnville. Hopefully someone will see my work and decide they can't go home without it.

Jo M. Orise Art Update for August and September 2013

Good news! I sold four paintings at the Aldermere Farm Art Show and Sale event, August 10, 2013! The Aldermere Show is a one-day, once-a-year event. My first showing with the Farm. Proceeds from the show are shared with the Farm, which is a non-profit organization. Always glad to help.

More good news, I am now displaying work for sale at the Brown Bag Cafe, Rockland, Maine  for the month of August, and will be there for the month of September as well! Come visit! Take a painting home and enjoy your new window to an artist's vision.

Presently, I am working on a few compositions in my brain and can't wait to grab a pencil and brush.

All this happened this past weekend. You will see some of my original oil and acrylic paintings and limited edition water color and pen and ink prints of seascapes and landscapes, which include the popular belties.

Come to Camden and Port Clyde! Enjoy the ocean and friendly people who live and work in the area. Tom and I spend our summers in the area. Why? Because we love the Maine Coast—we were married on the Grace Bailey schooner in 1998 and spent six wonderful days out at sea for our honeymoon. We arrived unexpectedly and the other guests were elated at having a wedding on ship! We were all strangers when we arrived, we were a family when we left.

If there is ever a place to feel welcome, it is on the Maine coast. Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Port Clyde, St. George, and Cushing have so much to offer in the arts, lectures, restaurants, sailing, bicycling and so much more. We spend lots of time in the Rockland and Camden libraries. They have a fabulous collections of books and videos. You can sign up for a library card and start taking home books for your enjoyment.
